This print is a stunning example of Joan Fontcuberta's wild virtual fantasy world, which refers to the metaphoric dialogue between illusion, nature, culture, and technology. One of Spain's most prominent and innovative artists, Joan Fontcuberta is best known for exploring the intersection between art, science, and illusion. Using computer software originally intended for the military, Fontcuberta creates a series of fantastical landscapes by transforming classic landscape painting and photography into virtual worlds. In Orogenesis: Kandinsky, 2004, he looks to Wassily Kandinsky's The Stanberg Lake II and transforms the landscape into a three-dimensional fantasy world. Joan Fontcuberta, who was in born in Barcelona in 1955, teaches at the Audiovisual Communication School at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. Widely exhibited internationally, he has had solo exhibitions at the MoMA, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. His most recent monograph Landscapes without Memory (Aperture 2005) was published in the fall of 2005 and the same work is currently being shown at the Aperture Gallery through March 30, 2005. He is represented by the Zabriskie Gallery in New York; Galerie Nathalie Parienté, Paris; and Galería Senda, Madrid, among others.
