George Clymer. 8" x 10" autograph letter signed, "G. C.," three pages, no place, May 17 (1808), to his son, Henry. "…I have bought a small farm for Nancy…about 2 ½ miles SW from the Schuykill bridge…the place will be brought perhaps half a mile nearer should the projected turnpike to Baltimore be made…some late write from contemplating the events of the French Revolution, says that nothing has come to pass in it but impossibilities. If both a federal Governor and a federal Congress should be elected it will be in consequence of the embarge, but the embargo will nonetheless be continued for even men chosen for the very purpose of removing it, when they come to sit upon the question will hesitate to engage us in the war with England agt. France…When I spoke with some degree of satisfaction on Bonaparte's getting rid of kings – I should have finished with a wish that when he had completed this work he would get rid of himself, by rope poison dagger or gun…." Age spotted with fold breaks and some paper loss at the margins, one affecting the "C" of his signature.
