Dec of Indep Signer ROBT MORRIS - Financial Doc Sign
Description
Robert Morris (1734-1806) Financier. Morris was a signer to the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Morris was known as the "Financier of the Revolution," because of his role in securing financial assistance for the American side in the Revolutionary War. 12 ½" x 9" partially printed document signed, Philadelphia, December 15, 1790. The document grants to James Greenleaf "…Eight hundred and thirty three Shares in the entire of the NORTH AMERICAN LAND COMPANY…." The document is signed by Morris as president. There is a cancellation line through the signature, a center fold break has been discreetly repaired, some paper loss at the margins. Morris began this company with the aid of John Nicholson and James Greenleaf. Its land holdings were scattered over America with 4,000,000 acres between Georgia, the Carolinas, New York, and the states in between. The North American Land Company failed in 1798, because revenues from installment sales and share sales did not come in quickly enough to meet the loan and tax deadlines, causing Morris to end up in debtors prison.
