Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) Patriot and statesman. Gerry was a member of the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1812 he advocated war with Britain and was elected vice president on a ticket with James Madison. 6 ˝"x 8", five pages, November 1780, autograph transcription signed, "Honble Mr. Gerry," "Copy of Mr. Lowell's of the 20th of Nov 1780 Letter taken from A New York Paper…." "…25,000 Men continue in the service of the United States, during ye Present War with Great Britain, to provide Arms, ammunition, clothing, military & hospital stores, & camp equipage of all kinds; Waggons, Horses & forage; to supply said Army…I will endeavor to get some Decency for General W…." James Lovell (1737-1814) was an educator and statesman from Boston. He was a delegate for Massachusetts to the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1782.
