Israel Thorndike (1755-1832) Sailor and merchant. Thorndike commanded a privateer during the American Revolution, and became active in the early China trade. He was elected to the Massachusetts Legislature thirteen times. He is considered to have been the fiftieth wealthiest American of all time. An unusual and exceedingly rare 4 ½" x 2" check, written and signed, United States Bank, July 14, 1807. There are two cancellation holes away from the signature.
