The five cent stamp of 1847 was one of the first adhesive postage stamps authorized for issue by the Post Office Department, in response to a law passed on March 3, 1847. 5" x 3 ¼" postal cover with the five cent Benjamin Franklin stamp with a red circular cancellation "New York May 17."
