John Chambers (1780–1852) Politician. Chambers served as Aide-de-Camp to General Harrison in the War of 1812 with the rank of Major. After the war he served in Congress and was Governor of the Territory of Iowa from 1841 to1845. While there, he was appointed commissioner to negotiate a treaty with the Sac and Fox Indians. Chambers together with Major John Beach, the United States Indian agent, hosted a week long council with the Sac and Fox that resulted in a treaty to purchase much of Iowa from the Indians, which was signed on October 11, 1842. 8" x 19" two page contract between Indian Agent John Beach and the suppliers of goods for the Sac and Fox under the terms of the October 11th agreement, September 28, 1842, signed twice by John Chambers and also signed by Beach and the four men agreeing to provide the provisions. "…For the sum of Eight Hundred Dollars lawful money of the United States, for which payment…we bind ourselves…The condition of this obligation…entered into contract with John Beach, U.S. Indian Agent to furnish provision for the treaty with the Sac and Foxes…." The Articles of Agreement appear on the reverse: "…that said Wright and Charlton shall furnish and deliver at such places near the Sac and Fox Agency…every day…The following provisions to wit: 2000 pounds of fat, merchantable Beef neatly slaughtered, Eleven barrels of Superior Flour, 55 pounds of Lard…the provisions shall be in good quality…."
