Pres JAMES BUCHANAN - Autograph Ltr Signed- Content
Description
James Buchanan (1791-1868) 15th President. 6 ¼" x 7 ¾" autograph letter signed, Wheatland, November 7, 1867, to Dr. John B. Blake. "…I enclose you a check…for $100 which I desire you to pay to Mrs. E. M. King of F. Street, the lady with whom Col. King & myself used to board…Her appeal to me was so strong that I could not resist it for she is a highly respectable woman. Will you please to send round for her & thus save me the trouble of writing her a letter? I am now recovering from a severe & painful attack of gout in my left hand & arm…." Buchanan lived in Washington, for many years with William Rufus King (1786-1853) who was a senator from Alabama and vice president serving with Franklin Pierce. Buchanan and King's close relationship prompted Andrew Jackson to refer to Buchanan and King as "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy."
