Description
Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) 18th President. 7 ½" x 9 ¾" letter endorsed, July 9, 1866. The letter is a two and one-third page autograph letter signed by Henry Hunt, Washington, D.C., July 7, 1866, to Major General Rawlings, seeking the promotion of Captains James O. Churchill and M. S. Croswell. "…Captain Churchill entered the service as a private rose to a Lieutenancy was shot through both legs at Fort Donaldson in 1862 served subsequently as an ordinance officer in the Army of the West commanded by General Grant…." Grant has approved the request on the reverse: "Approved and recommended. U.S. Grant." Grant's rank, "Lieut. Gen." and the date have been added in another hand. Slightly soiled in the folds.
