Johnson (1903-1973) 36th President. 24" x 20" partially printed document signed, Washington, March 1, 1968 the document is the appointment of Clark Clifford as Secretary of Defense, also signed by Secretary of State Dean Rusk. On January 19, 1968, President Johnson announced his selection of Clifford to succeed Robert McNamara as Secretary of Defense. Clifford took office committed to rethinking President Johnson's Vietnam policies, and Vietnam policy consumed most of his time. He managed the initial de-escalation of United States involvement in Vietnam and strongly influenced Johnson in favor of a de-escalation strategy. This historically important document has been achivally framed and is in pristine condition.
