Description
Application for an Assistant Surgeon in the United States Navy – 1861. 7 ½" x 9 ½" autograph letter signed by James H. Macomber, M.D., Brooklyn, July 23, 1861. The letter is a "Certificate of Physical Capacity" for the position of Assistant Surgeon. "…my health at this time is good and robust…." Included is a 7 ½" x 12 ¼" autograph document signed by Macomber which is his resume: "…I…have practiced medicine nearly one year I have been employed in a drug store for about one year…." Also, two 7 ½" x 12 ¼" pages which list eight medical questions, "…What are the causes, symptoms and treatment of fracture of the clavical…" with Macombers answers, "…The causes of fracture of the clavical are direct or indirect…direct as from a blow, indirect as from a fall…." Macomber served on the USS Seneca and USS St. Louis.
