(James Brady) (1940- ) Presidential Assistant. Brady achieved a lifelong career goal with his appointment by President Ronald Reagan in January of 1981 to be Assistant to the President and White House Press Secretary. However, his service was interrupted on March 30, 1981, when John Hinckley attempted to assassinate the President, and shot President Reagan, Mr. Brady, and two law enforcement officers. Although seriously wounded by the gunshot wound to the head, Mr. Brady remained the White House Press Secretary until the end of the Reagan Administration. Collection of seven items sent to and issued to Brady: Edward M. Kennedy, 6 ¼" x 8 ½" typed letter signed, United States Senate, April 3, 1981. "…This is truly a time of shock, outrage and grief for all Americans…." He adds an autograph postscript: "My hope for a speedy recovery." Thomas S. Foley, 7" x 9" typed letter signed, House of Representatives, April 2, 1981, to Sara Brady. "…Please accept my every wish for your husband's quick and total recovery from the grievous injuries he suffered during the attack on the President…." Also Brady's visitors' badge from the Department of Defense, four engraved invitations in White House envelopes, addressed to Brady and his wife with RSVP and identification cards and an invitation to a gala honoring the visit of Pierre Trudeau.
