READBOURNE HOUSE* - Handmade replica house built in the 1870's by Tilney Brothers, Baltimore sash makers for their younger sister. Built as a replica of the oldest surviving Georgian house in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, the original Readbourne was built in 1732 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and several of the original rooms are now at Winterthur. The replica has a well-documented provenance and was handed down to the original owner's daughter, Miss Ethel Howard, who lived with Baltimore history teacher, Miss Gertrude Sappington. In the 1950's and `60's, Miss Sappington undertook massive renovations to the house and tripled its size by adding wings to each side. The wallpapers and window draperies date from this period, as does the elaborate black marble fireplace in the Blue Drawing room. While in Miss Sappington's possession, the house was exhibited widely and featured in a number of publications, including the Architectural Digest in Nov/Dec 1975. The dollhouse was much admired by the late Flora Gill Jacobs, who described it as one of her favorite houses in a 1958 letter to Miss Sappington. Three binders of documentation, including that letter, accompany this house. Later owners dismantled the additions and the house now consists of the original center section comprised of four beautifully proportioned and spacious rooms and two center hallways with stunning staircase and charming window seat at the top of the stair landing. The richly detailed exterior features particularly nice architectural features including Palladian windows, double colonnaded veranda and spectacularly intricate roof balustrade, house comes w/its own table and landscaped platform. Some pictures remain attached to the walls and there is modest wear to the richly detailed interior, some areas of exterior repaint, but overall the condition is excellent. House base 43''w 46''d 36''t.
