Medical Book/Journal of John Berrien Lindsley (1822-1897), Nashville educator (chancellor of the University of Nashville), minister, and physician. The leatherbound, blank (lined) book begins with Lindsley's handwritten sayings about medicine, including "A good surgeon must have an eagle's eye, a lion's heart, and a lady's hand. -Old Proverb." There are several pages of hand-transcribed or copied Medical College of Pennsylvania lectures on topics such as circulation, respiration, digestion. Then, Lindsley begins to treat the book as a journal, recording books he has read (1842-1863), detailing important events of his life (1822-1848), and listing his family history and genealogy. Also included is a transcribed obituary of his grandfather Nathaniel Lawrence (Attorney General of the state of New York, Revolutionary War Officer). The volume concludes with a loving, 13 page obituary/eulogy for his mother, Margaret Elizabeth Lindsley, authored by his father (Philip Lindsley) but transcribed or copied by John Berrien Lindsley. 9 3/4 in x 8in. Fragile condition: front cover and several of the first pages fully detached, spine attached only to back cover. Circa 1842-1863. 2nd item - two bank notes signed by John Berrien Lindsley. Late 19th century. Lindsley Warden estate.
