Rare and important East Tennessee redware jar with pulled handles, Great Road jar form. Found in Rutledge, TN. Lead glaze with possible use of Iron oxide in the glazing process, producing speckled and darker run streaks, inside glaze with a lighter yellow glaze. Possible double glaze to the outside. Pulled handle with large fingerprint impression at each terminus. Flat, flared rim, deep incised line around upper shoulder. Unglazed bottom. Note - while this jar conforms to the known "Great Road" jar forms of East Tennessee, the slightly shorter neck area and unusual glaze represents a new discovery, possibly by a potter in the Rutledge area previously unknown. Overall in very good condition for age. Old chips to rim and base, minor glaze flakes to body, old wear to glaze inside of jar, old firing crack to base with a couple of small hairlines at base area. 10 7/8" height. Early 19th century.
