Large Middle TN jar, Lafever 18 gallon

Rare and extremely large Middle Tennessee stoneware jar, lug handles with incised "18" on shoulder as well as incised line extending around the circumference of the shoulder. Attributed to the Lafever pottery of Middle Tennessee. For similar jars with similar gallon capacity script refer to page 80, figure 15 of "A Survey of Historic Pottery Making In Tennessee 1979", Division of Archaeology, Tennessee Department of Conservation. Condition - old shallow chips to handles, otherwise excellent, no cracks or restoration. 26" height. Late 19th or early 20th century.
