Two (2) Southwest Virginia cobalt decorated jars. 1st item - Cobalt decorated jar found in Rural Retreat, VA. Probably made in Smyth County, VA. Cobalt decorated band half way around the rim, cobalt "2" (denoting gallon capacity), cobalt markings flanking two with a cobalt "feather vine" underneath the "2". Albany slip interior. Condition - excellent condition, rim slightly misshapen from kiln firing. 11 3/4" height. 19th century. 2nd item - Smyth County, VA cobalt decorated stoneware jar - "2" with dots, incised lines around shoulder (approx 2). Albany glaze interior. Iron deposits visible from red color of clay. Excellent condition, one old chip to inside rim. 12 1/4" height. 19th century. Hearn estate.
