Author: H. Rider Haggard
Publisher: Cassell & Company
Printing Year: 1885 1st Edition
Condition/Details: Bound in embossed green cloth boards, this antique volume is a very scarce early edition of the famous Victorian adventure novel. It is notable as the first English-language adventure novel set in Africa. This book bears several indications that it is the very first issue of the first edition, as the book shows three errors that were corrected after the initial publication of the first 2000 copies, e.g. on page 307 a footnote reads "...until the new wrod supplants the old one..." The accompanying images of page 10 and page 122 show the other indicative errors that were soon caught by the publisher. The volume does not include the catalog in the back; it may have been removed. This could be a very rare variant of the first edition, since the volume bears the original errors but not the Cassell catalogue. The volume does include the original lithographed foldout map illustration, bound into the beginning of the volume. The book shows some external wear, with tape-repaired, partially separated spine. The boards are somewhat shaken with a few partially detached pages; the pages are otherwise solidly bound with some mild age toning. The book measures approximately 5" x 7.5" and contains 320 numbered pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
