MENAION, in Greek, 15th century. Manuscript Menaion
[Eastern Mediterranean: 15th century]. Folio (300 x 20 mm), 267 ll. only, double column manuscript, 25 lines per column, in black ink a single hand, cursive Greek script, with initials in red. Stitched with an old wooden board attached and acting as a lower cover. Condition: leaves lacking at begining and end, margins tattered, leaves detached, dampstained, worming; lacking upper cover and spine. Provenance: marginalia, including writing and occasional drawings, a number of sailing ships and stylised figures all by an unidentified hand or hands. an interesting portion of 9 months (of 12) of the liturgical texts for celebrations on the menaion, usually found in twelve volumes called "menaia". The liturgical year for Eastern Orthodox Christians begins in September: the present manuscript begins with the reading for December 5th and ends with September 1st, and is therefore missing the texts from 2nd September to 4th December inclusive. The present work has been dated to 15th century, but may well be from the 14th. Images
