ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT MINIATURE, North Italy, early 16th century. God the Father, miniature on vellum.

[North Italy, Lombardy?: early 16th century]. Small miniature (45 x 95 mm) cut from a manuscript, painted in brown and opaque colored pigments and burnished gold; matted. Condition: very slight paint loss, the miniature cropped at top and bottom. This miniature shows god the father, white-haired and bearded, with a halo. His right hand is placed on an orb; with the other he gives the gesture of benediction. The face and features are delicately executed. The miniature, which may have originally headed the page of a breviary or similar work, is enclosed in a pink cartouche within a rich foliate background in blue, green and pink on a gold ground.
