HANNOVER, Raphael Levi. Tekhunat ha-Shamayim ve-khol Tseva'am u-Mahalakham [a treatise on astronomy]
[N.p but ?Germany, n.d. but 18th century]. Manuscript in brown ink on paper (310 x 200 mm), 41 numbered leaves with 38-42 unruled lines per page (text area: 295 x 170 mm) in an Ashkenazic cursive script. Contents: folios 1r-29v: text; 30r: additional note on solar eclipses; 30v-31v: blank; 32r-41r: notes on intercalation, also including a list of fairs in German towns (fol. 41r). Modern deep purple morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, back and front each with two modern and one older free endpapers/blanks. Condition: light dampstaining and soiling, shaved with the loss of some folio numbers. Provenance: Jewish College London (early stamp on front blank) the author was a pupil of leibnitz and completed the treatise in 5490 (= 1730AD). The text of this manuscript varies somewhat from that of the first edition (Amsterdam 1756; Vinograd Thesaurus p. 69, no.1742), and it is probably not an autograph, contrary to Neubauer's assumption. There are other manuscripts in Oxford and Moscow which are more likely to be autographs, and the writing in them is not identical. MSS Oxford, Mich. 498 and 603, and MS Moscow, Guenzburg 1743 (which is similar to Mich. 498), are all apparently drafts of this work. The work has been reprinted three times in phothographic reproductions of the Amsterdam 1787 edition (Bnei Brak 1969, New York 1996, and Bnei Brak 1998), and was published anew in Brooklyn 1988 and Netivot 1997. Cf. Neubauer, no 134, p. 38; cf. Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts, Jerusalem, F 4774.
