Abraham LINCOLN. Sentinel, Extra. President's Message.
[Richmond, VA: c. 2 December 1862]. 2 pp., newspaper broadsheet (630 x 230 mm). Text in three columns. Condition: very minor foxing, folds, a few short edge tears. confederate newspaper extra printing of lincoln's 1862 annual message: the precursor to the emancipation proclamation. Lincoln's 1862 message is almost entirely on the subject of emancipation. Given just a few months after his 22 September 1862 preliminary emancipation proclamation, this was the last attempt to end the war by proposing constitutional amendments offering compensation for the voluntary freeing of slaves. His proposal given in this message was refused and on the first day of Janaury 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation issued. Given the ire of the south to Lincoln and the subject of this address, this Richmond newspaper extra printing is an extraordinary survival.Images
