[Asia]. De L'Asie. Double-page map engraved map spanning from Mideast to New Guinea to Kamchatka, flanked by a panel of French text on either side, c.mid-late 1700s. Map 12 3/8 x 14 in. Including text panels, 12 3/8 x 21 3/8 in. Plate number ''60'' at upper right. Left text column describes Asian cuisine, lifestyles, forms of government, and religions, and mentions the exploits of the Macedonian, Turkish, and Mongol Empires. Right text column names key bodies of water (Caspian Sea, Huang Ho River, Tigris River, etc.), and lists notable wildlife (the elephant, rhino, lion, tiger, leopard, camel, and dromedary). Hand-colored.
