Boughton (George Henry, R.A., 1834-1905) Dutch costume study,
seated female figure in an embroidered apron and ice skates, watercolour over soft pencil, on dark green paper, sheet 305 x 380mm., signed in pencil, lower right, ***George Henry Boughton was born in Norwich, England, but emigrated to North America with his family as a child. But after studying in Paris he settled in London in the 1860s. He exhibited regularly on both sides of the Atlantic, including at the Royal Academy, to which he was elected an associate member in 1879, and then a full member in 1896. He was known for his depictions of rural figures, and from the 1880s he took a particular interest in Dutch subjects..
