right profile of the sitter's face, pencil on buff wove paper, 230 x 150mm., signed, dated and inscribed to Oppenheimer, in pencil, lower right, framed and glazed, 1943.***Provenance: Ex-collection of Siegfried Oppenheimer. The artist Josef Oppenheimer (1876-1967) was born in Germany but spent much of his life abroad. He had lived in London from 1900 to 1910, and took up residence there again from 1933 to 1949, during which time Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966) came to England as a refugee from Nazi Germany, in 1939. Although the latter returned to Germany in 1953, Oppenheimer then divided his time between England and Canada, until his death in Montreal in 1967..
