"Barometric Probe Nose Spike" (18x7") A striking black metal piece of production hardware mounted on a wooden base (4x3.5x3.5"). This barometric probe (also known as a static pressure probe) was used only on the Nike Hercules missile with special weapons capabilities (nuclear warheads). It's purpose was to sense the barometric pressure and enable the fuse barrow and arm barrow setting within the warhead. The upper part of the assembly is spring loaded and can move on two axes allowing the tip to rotate in a full circle. This is a production part with serial, lot and contract numbers stamped into the metal. These missiles were deployed from 1958 until the anti missile treaties were signed in 1974. This missile is still active in South Korea. A striking addition to any collection.
