FLOWN Apollo 11 Flight Awareness Medal
Description
Flown Manned Flight Awareness Medallion The front of the medallion (1.25" diameter) bears the image of an astronaut on the moon facing the American flag, and reads "The Eagle has Landed, July 20, 1969". The reverse reads "This medallion contains metal from spacecrafts Columbia and Eagle, that took astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on their historic Apollo 11 mission that resulted in the first landing of man on the Moon". Good condition with a slight tarnish and complete with its original plastic case (2x2.5"). Unlike others we have seen, this medallion ALSO has the original 5" x 1.75" piece of paper that describes WHERE the metal came from on each spacecraft that was used in manufacture of this medallion. The description reads: "From the Eagle: A clamp whose function was to fasten the pulley system used to haul the lunar rocks from the surface of the Moon into the ascent stage for return to the Lunar Laboratory on Earth. The remainder of the pulley system still resided on the Moon at the Tranquility Base. From the Columbia: A bolt whose function was to tie down the heat shield which protected the astronauts during reentry into the Earth's atmosphere." Rare to find this medallion with original case AND description.
