Apollo 15 Flown Robbins Medallion

Description
Flown "Original" 35mm. Sterling Silver Medallion (No. 125) in its original plastic case and with the incorrect spelling of "Apennine" on the reverse. The medallions for Apollo 15 were designed by Italian designer Emilio Pucci. It was not realized until it was too late that the mission's landing site, Hadley-Apennine was misspelled on the medallion with two "P's and that the designer had placed his initials on the medallion. In addition, medallions No. 1-127 were made with silver from a silver bar recovered from a Spanish galleon sunk off the Florida coast near Cape Canaveral. These medallions all has the initials and misspelled "Apennine". Because of the mistakes, medallions No. 128-304 were returned to the Robbins Company after the flight to be melted down and restruck. New medallions, made with regular silver were made correcting the design errors. (see lot 649). As a result, only medallions No. 1-127 contain flown silver. Extremely rare. An enclosed Al Worden, hand-signed, typed certificate of authenticity reads, in part: "I hereby certify that this Apollo 15 medallion, number 125, went to the moon aboard Apollo 15 in the spacecraft Endeavour. The medallion contains antique silver from the hold of a Spanish ship sunk off the coast of Florida in the 1700s. It remained in the command module during the lunar orbit phase of the flight…".
