Official NASA Fireproof Bicycle Brand Playing Cards "Royal Flush" in Clubs made by the United States Playing Card Co. for NASA and the astronauts. Made from special fireproof paper, the company made "several hundred" decks of these cards, most of which have not survived the test of time. The fireproof playing cards grew out of a request from NASA which realized a need for some sort of leisure-time recreational facilities for crews on long-duration space missions in spacecraft cabins with 100% oxygen. Development begun in the 1960s, but was discontinued after the Apollo 1 fire caused a re-evaluation of the 100% oxygen atmosphere in the spacecraft cabins on subsequent missions. A copy of a four page Houston Enquirer article about these cards is included. Unusual.
