Flown U.S. Flag (5x2.5") A Beta cloth U.S. flag and a spool of ribbon, both mounted on a wooden presentation plaque (12x9") with a metal descriptive plaque that reads: "To Deke / Full Fledged Member of Every American Space Crew and Expert Cutter of the Red Tape / Here's the Tape and Flag We Flew on Sky Lab I". The names of the crew members (Conrad, Kerwin and Wertz) are engraved below. The red tape spool has an ID number handstamped in black on one end. The tape is a type of plastic tape that has stiffened, cracked and separated over the years, but is still there. The US flag is sewn onto a ragged piece of gold flight suit material, raggedly cut. This is the first flown flag we have seen from this flight. An important piece of memorabilia given to the Mercury 7 astronaut whose input and common sense was directly instrumental to the success of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Ex. the Deke Slayton Estate collection.
