Hatley(?), stating it is a true copy of the original on file in the office of Hope Mutual Life Insurance Company. Original is signed by D.D. Bullock, Justice of Peace of Sacramento County, dated June 15, 1850. This undated copy is from the same period.Begins: "State of California, Sacramento City. This day appeared before me…". This is the sworn statement of Elijah Pipes concerning the death of his friend Ezra McIntosh, a Gold Rush miner. He states: "I formed his acquaintance in the States and traveled in company with him a part of the way to this Country – after having arrived at this Country I in company with…McIntosh went to Morrison Island on the American Fork, there to work – one week had elapsed after our arrival…when S. Ezra McIntosh was taken sick. I then called two physicians who attended [to] him, they pronounced him sick of California fever. S. McIntosh continued sick…for the space of seven weeks and at the expiration of that time, on the 5th day of Nov. 1849…McIntosh, departed this life…was about 22 years of age…". He further states he met him at Dorchester, Massachusetts. Rare account of the death of a Gold Rush '49er.
