An early, and characteristic, painting by Mary Belle Williams (1873-1943), a native of Ohio, who studied art an the ASL in New York City before moving to San Diego in 1906. She is noted for her portraits (especially of Native Americans), landscapes, miniatures and floral still lifes. She was a member of the San Diego Art Guild, and her work was exhibited at the Panama California Exposition in 1915, the Western Painters Traveling Exhibition, 1923-1924, the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery, etc.
