William Randolph Hearst Letter
Description
Title: Autograph Letter to Samuel E. Moffett
Author: Hearst, William Randolph
Description: Autograph letter, undated. 3 pp. In pencil on Hotel Martin letterhead. Signed with initials.Hearst addresses New York Journal editor Samuel E. Moffett. In full: "Dear Moffett, You know the Journal is not liked by the Godly and the consequently we should not go contrary to the views of the Godly at every opportunity. This morning we had an editorial in which we went out of our way to rap the Godly for objecting to Les Miserables as a school book. I think we were wrong and the Godly were right. I myself would object to Les Miserables as a text book for my kids if I had any. But that is not the question. The point is this that we further intensify the feeling of antagonism to the Journal that we increase the impression that the Journal is the organ of Anarchy and free love. It is our plan to be too--narrow bigoted orthodox if necessary. We do not wish to shock the conventionalities any further. Please bear this in mind. Please speak to me about it. Sincerely, W.R. Hearst." An interesting insight into the thinking of the master of "yellow journalism" implying that sensationalism functions most efficiently when the views it puts forward are not too divergent from the mainstream.
