Description: [iii]-xvi, [2], 17-508 + [8] ad pp. Numerous wood-engraved plates & illustrations; hand-colored folding map loose in rear endpaper pocket. 8¾x5¾, original brown cloth stamped in gilt, rebacked with titled portion of original spine strip laid on. First American Edition.Account by the first European to cross tropical Africa from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. Turned down by the Royal Geographical Society when he offered to fine Livingstone, he was appointed to lead the expedition to take supplies to Livingstone after Stanley had indeed found him. After a 500 mile journey through the heart of Africa, Cameron heard of Livingstone's death, but pressed on in his exploration. He arranged for Livingstone's belongings and journals to be shipped back to England, and then proceeded to survey Africa's second largest lake, Lake Tantanyika. Ownership signature of F. Wolferstan Thomas, dated 1877, to the top of the title-page.
