Scarce Dual Patent Nickel Plated Billinghurst Birdcage Reel. William Billinghurst patented his now famous reel in 1859, and renewed the patent in 1873. Reels built after the 1873 renewal date are typically found with nickel plating, as is this example. Marked on the spool, "Billinghurst's Patent - Rochester NY, Aug 9, 1859 & 1873", this 2 7/8" diameter reel has some plating loss, a full length cast foot with a loose spool ring and folding handle. In good+ condition.
