each mahogany with arched crest and pierced central splat, tapered legs with H stretcher, one with original slip seat, British, early 19th century, 37 x 20-1/4 x 16 in. Old surface with rich reddish/brown color, replaced seat blocks, normal wear and abrasions throughout. Beech secondary wood typically suggests a British origin but is frequently found in coastal Virginia chairs of this period.
