highly figured cherry with pine secondary, arched white painted dial signed "Ziba Ferris, Wilmington", with painted moon dial and peach and grape spandrels, scrolled pediment with carved rosettes centering turned finial, waisted case with highly figured door on box face with French feet, probably 1807-1810 period, 94 x 19-1/2 x 10-1/4 in. Excellent condition throughout, old refinishing with mellow dark color, painted dial with very minor crackle and surface dirt, scattered flaking and wear to moon dial (moon dial does not turn freely), case in excellent condition, original saddle board good match to uprights, one rosette replaced, original feet and blocking with numerous breaks and repairs, crack to base panel, corner crack to glazed glass door, period weights and pendulum present, three petals on original rosette patched, minor cracks to moldings, broken at top of pendulum (needs rethreading), other very minor repairs. Provenance: Purchased from the Estate of Mr. Falls of Boca Raton, Florida. Mr. Falls had reputedly purchased the clock in 1936 from the estate of a Washington, D.C. family; Private Collection, Tennessee The unusual cherry primary wood of the case may suggest that it was made by Ziba Ferris soon after his Wilmington shop opened in 1807 and before he began to order cases from other makers. Reserve: $16,000
