a gentleman said to be Gaspard de Coligny (1519-1572), Admiral of France and first martyr in the St. Bartholomew massacre of 1572, oil on copper, French or Dutch School, late 16th/early 17th century, 3-3/8 x 2-9/16 in.; 18th century Spanish plate frame, black painted with original gilt decoration. Flaking, retouch, crackle, grime, darkened; frame with losses and pest damage.
