Item Details
Description
This charger measures just over 1.75 inches tall by 18 inches in diameter. This stoneware specimen was purchased from the exhibition and sale Pyrotechniques III at Western Nevada College, Carson City, Nevada in 2009 by Vasefinder and is signed Winter, as shown. Per the Charlie B Gallery, Joe Winter (1967-) was born in Everett Washington into a military family where he was reared in the West and Midwest region of the United States as well as he lived in Germany for a brief time. At a very young age, Joe became interested in the clay medium. In the fifth grade, he visited the University of Wisconsin , Platteville, where he was granted permission to use their facilities under the guidance of Roger Gottschalk. Working in clay from this period through high school, Joe would originally attend Platteville for one year before transferring to Northern Arizona University, where he would receive his B.F.A, as a student of Don Bendel. It was while he lived in Arizona that he met one of his most important mentors in the medium Yukio Yamamoto of Himeji City, Japan . From Northern Arizona, he would complete his advanced studies or M.F.A. at East Carolina, where he was a student of Charles Chamberlain, an Alfred graduate. Joe’s work represents an incredible synergy of North Carolina and Japanese Folk Traditions of working in clay. His work includes gas, raku and wood fired pots that are both functional and non-functional in content. A portion of his exhibition record includes: It’s Elemental: Wood, Fiber, Clay, Glass, and Metal, Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Arizona, in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, Master’s Exhibition in 1995 at Gray Gallery in Greenville, Carolina, Feats of Clay, at Lincoln Arts in Lincoln, California in 1996, the Nevada Artist’s Biennial at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno in 1996. In 2005, he was awarded top prize in the Vasefinder Nationals by juror Jenny Floch. His work is in the permanent collection of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, Missouri, Joyner Library at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina and Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
