Autographs
Group of 50 Signatures of Business and Political Figures
(BUSINESS & GOVERNMENT DIGNITARIES).
c. 1880, Printed Autograph Card, 9.25" x 7," with 50 different autographs on the front and back, Choice Extremely Fine. This card has even toning, without tears, folds or other defects. These fifty penciled signatures were probably solicited by an individual at a particular party or event. The date of this event can be placed around 1880 because one of the signers died in 1883. The identified signatures are mostly business and political figures. Logic would suggest that the others were notable leaders in finance and politics as well.
Among the names we have identified on this card are: John Jacob Astor (III or IV); Cornelius N. Bliss (1833-1911 - Secretary of Interior 1897-99); Benjamin H. Bristow (1832-1896 - Secretary of the U. S. Treasury 1874-76); Joseph H. Choate (1832-1917 - Diplomat); Chauncy M. Depew (1834-1928 - Senator for NY; financier); William E. Dodge (1805-1883 - YMCA founder; pres. Phelps, Dodge & Co.); William M. Evarts (1818-1901 - Senator for NY; U.S. Attorney General; Secretary of State); Henry C. Potter (1835-1908 - Episcopal bishop); and J. W. Howe - possibly Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910 - author of Battle Hymn of the Republic).
Other interesting but so far unidentified names include: Alexander L. Agnew; A. G. Agnew; M. C. D. Borden; J. M. Bundy; Watson E. Case; Henry G. Chapman; J. K. Cilley; Dousman B. Gaton; C. J. Warren Goddard; James D. Hague; Granville Hawes; Rich. P. Herrick; Henry E. Howland; Birdseye B. Kenner (?); H. L. Kendrick; Sigourney W. Pau; J. M. Regna; and Allen Reinick. This highly interesting autograph grouping demands further research.
