Important 19th Century Daguerrotype
of Explorer William Clark
(WILLAM CLARK), Partner of Merriweather Lewis in a Striking Corps of Discovery.
c. 1850, Daguerrotype Portrait with a striking resemblance to the explorer William Clark, Fine. Large woodframe composition case, 4.75" x 3.75" with leather covering and embossed floral designs and festooning borders. Exquisite gilt mat with octagonal opening, highlighting a gentleman with a jacket, tie, and vest, and seated. Mirror-like background and silver/gray highlights to this daguerrotype. Sold "as is" in its case. Minor spotting to image, and a dark, rainbow-like line encircles the portrait; overall it is very striking.
The man in this portrait has been identified as a member of the Clark family and is believed to be William Clark (1770-1836) himself, partner of Merriweather Lewis in the Corps of Discovery. The daguerrotype has descended in the Clark family to the present owner.
