Fine archive of 7 Alexander H. Stephens items, spanning 1874-1882, Very Good to Very Fine. Most of these items are envelopes addressed to Stephens, but some have notations on the back written in his hand. All the covers in this lot are from after the Civil War. All the letters were long ago removed from these covers, but many have notations on the back in Alexander H. Stephens' handwriting, indicating the subject of the missing letter. Most of the dates are based on the letter, someone having written the date lightly in pencil on most of these covers. 1. January 17, 1874, business envelope from attorney Charles Shockley in Appling, GA to Stephens in Washington, DC. Stephens' notation on the back reads: "C. H. Shockley - Appling, Ga. - Jan. 17, 1874 - (Attended to) - wants Havana tobacco seed - Letter answered." Back flap missing, otherwise in nice condition. 2. January 24, 1874, addressed to Stephens in Washington. Stephens' notation reads: "Wm. Lundy - Macon, Ga. Jan. 24, 1874 - About a claim for 2 mules seized by U.S. troops which he values at $400. He has written Mr. Blount about the matter. Wants it brought before Congress." Back flap and a piece of the top front missing, otherwise in nice condition. A large black "K" cancels the stamp. 3. February 5, 1874, official envelope from the Georgia House of Representatives to Stephens in Washington, DC. Stephens' notation" "Hon. R.D. Yow - Atlanta, Ga. Feb. 5th, 1874 - Wants a post route established form Tocoa City on the Air Line R.R. in Habersham County via Mosely's Store and Goodwill in Franklin County to Parker's Store in Hart County. Encloses diagram." About 1/3 of the front of this envelope, including most of the top edge, is missing. Otherwise this cover is in fairly nice condition. 4. March 24, 1874, from New York to Stephens in Washington, DC. Stephens' notation: "A.H. Dawson - March 24, 1874 New York, N.Y. - 'I understand that occasiions are frequently made for counsel to commissions, committees, arbitraments, Boards & various organizations, subject to your control etc' (Friendly)." Back flap and part of top edge missing, otherwise in nice condition. The stamp (half of which is gone) is cancelled with a large numeral "11" in a ring. 5. March 22, 1875, to Stephens in Washington, DC. Stephens' notation reads: "W. R. Little, Esq. Carnesville, Ga. March 22nd 1875 - About prospect of collecting claims in favor of Johnston, Leuws & Co." Cover is complete with a tear in the back. Otherwise very nice. 6. June 13, 1876, to Stephens in Crawfordville, GA. His notation on the back reads: "J. Henly Smith - Atlanta, Ga. June 13th 1876." Nice condition, with no postal markings. 7. August 3, 1882, From the Post Office Department, in an official envelope with preprinted Official Postal Service stamp in black, to Stephens at House of Representatives in Washington. This cover has a Washington cancellation on the front, and a Carrier (Georgia) cancellation on the back, both dated August 3rd. Part of the lower left corner is missing and there is a tear half way across the front of the envelope. There is no notation on the back. (7 items)
