first edition, second issue, [200 copies printed], coloured frontispiece and 41 full-page line illustrations, some soiling and foxing to first few leaves, original olive green paper pictorial boards, rounded spine, a little worn, contemporary ink inscription to front free end-paper, 16mo, Privately printed by the author, February, 1902

***Privately printed by Beatrix Potter after being rejected by at least 6 publishers. The initial print run of 250 copies went on sale in December 1901, followed in January 1902 by another run of only 200 copies. The second printing contained the same illustrations as the first but had a few textual alterations and the binding had a rounded rather than flat spine. Beatrix Potter - see also lots 304-309.
