Potter (Beatrix, afterwards Mrs Heelis, writer and illustrator, 1866-1943) Autograph Letter to Mrs Bertha Mahoney Miller, editor of the Horn Book, part only, 2pp. only, n.p., n.d., [1942], discussing the publication of Peter Rabbit and her other books, "... it was the first book - Peter Rabbit which could not find a publisher. It is true that I printed a small private edition of the Tailor of Gloucester; a private printing which was already in progress when Peter Rabbit came out publicly. The instant success of Peter made it easy to place other books. The first book Peter was not copyrighted, and it was extensively pirated. Compared with the Rabbit series, the Caravan tales had no great numerical success, but I was quite satisfied - I just wanted to have them in print; and not on horrid clay faced paper. Also I had pleasure in choosing a plain artistic binding for my English copies of the 'Caravan' - not gaudy ugly toy book style. I believe my attitude of mind towards my own successful publications has been comical; at one time I almost loathed Peter Rabbit I was so sick of him. I still cannot understand his perennial success", folds.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
