second Latin edition, 86 leaves only (of 120; a2-a8, ?d8, e1-n8 [n5-n8 misbound at end] & p2-p9), rubricated initials and occasional flourish, 13-line woodcut initial R with the arms of the archbishop of Mainz on a2r, 6 woodcut illustrations after Erhard Reuwich, 5 alphabet diagrams, occasional old marginalia, lacking frontispiece, folding views (and therefore the leaves they backed, including that with woodcut of animals), colophon and Vocabulary, a1 badly worn and soiled with extensive repairs to margins, a3-5 with loss to upper corners, a3 with small repair to lower fore-corner, diminishing damp-stain from a2-g1 mostly affecting upper fore-corner, further light stain to inner margin throughout, late 19th century half calf, upper joint cracked, [Goff B-1190; Fairfax Murray German 93], chancery folio, [Speier, Peter Drach, 29 July 1490].***Second Latin edition of the first illustrated book of travel and one of the most important illustrated books of the fifteenth century. Bernhard von Breydenbach was cardinal of Mainz, and this account details his visit to Palestine and Mount Sinai undertaken in 1483-84 in the company of Count John of Solms, Philip of Bicken, and other noblemen of the region. Ernhard Reuwich's original edition published in 1483 utilised his own drawings taken when he also accompanied the expedition in the role of official artist..
