Boys (Thomas Shotter) Original Views of London as it is, additional tinted lithograph title and 25 plates, lithograph dedication leaf misbound at very beginning, printed title with several repaired tears, foxed and loose, occasional foxing to plates, original maroon morocco-backed cloth with gilt vignette and lettering on upper cover, rebacked, [Abbey, Scenery 240; Tooley 104; Ray 87], folio, 1842.***"The finest of the lithograph books on London" Tooley. After beginning his work in lithography in Paris, Boys returned to England in 1837 and enjoyed some financial success. He produced two of the greatest English illustrated books of the period, this work and Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen..., in 1839. "his vivid realization of the thronging metropolis in the early 1840s, which made his contemporaries admit that familiar city scenes could be as "picturesque" as mountains or lakes, has lost none of its appeal" Ray..
