Gauci after Charles Bentley, dedication with gold-printed arms, engraved map, partially hand-coloured, wood-engraved illustrations, list of subscribers, contemporary ink inscription to additional title "To Mr & Mrs. Gilgeous, from, Wm. B. Pollard, Geo. Town, Demerara, Oct.15th 1841", a few very short tears to lower margins, occasional spotting or finger-soiling, mostly marginal, contemporary marbled boards, rebacked in 20th century calf, upper cover with original morocco label, boards lightly scuffed, slightly rubbed elsewhere, [Abbey, Travel, 720; Sabin 77796; Tooley 447], folio, Ackermann & Co., 1840.***Scarce. Between 1835 and 1839 Schomburgk conducted an expedition of exploration to British Guiana on behalf of The Royal Geographical Society. During his successful time there he discovered the giant Victoria Regia lily. He returned to the country in 1841 as a British government official to survey the colony and fix its eastern and western boundaries, resulting in the provisional boundary between British Guiana and Venezuela known as the Schomburgk Line..
