Catton (Charles) Animals Drawn from Nature,
first edition, 36 superb hand-coloured aquatint plates by and after Catton, heightened with white and gum arabic, plates trimmed to image and mounted on contemporary blanks (watermarked 1794), then framed within pen & ink and wash borders, with ms. captions and numerals, HRH The Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester's copy with his bookplate on front pastedown, later marbled endpapers, contemporary polished calf with neo-classical gilt borders, rebacked and recornered in later calf, some scuffs to covers, but overall a very attractive copy, [Nissen ZBI 847; Prideaux p.330], oblong folio, for the author, [1787]-88.***The earliest use of aquatint for a work on natural history (Prideaux p.289). This copy is unusual in that it is bound in portrait rather than landscape format..
