3 vol., in 1, first editions, complete with allegorical engraved frontispiece to the first vol., engraved portrait to the second vol., the engraved frontispiece and plates are by Winterschmidt in the third vol., supplement to the first 2 vol., together 150 contemporary hand-coloured engravings, contemporary half-speckled calf, paper covered boards, gilt lettering, some light wear, [Wellcome III, p.472], [Nuremberg], 1760-62.

***Ledermuller (1719-1769) lawyer, physician, bee-keeper, amateur microscopist and keeper of the natural history collection of the Margrave of Brandenburg-Colmbach. "The author was an eighteenth-century polymath. By profession a lawyer, Ledermuller shows a discerning interest in the art and science of botany, and in the newer science of microscopy" (Hunt). Ledermuller began his microscopical studies under the guidance of Trew. He was particularly interested in adapting camera obscuras to operate as solar microscopes so that he could closely observe insects..
