***First publication of Minkowski's "Raum und Zeit": he had first introduced his theory of the space-time continuum in an earlier paper of 1907 (Zwei Abhandlungen über die Grundgleichungen der Electrodynamik), but the present work is less technical in its language and brought the concept to a wider audience.
